Since the publication of a paper by Gauthier in 1973, it has been a widespread opinion that the social institution known as xenia concerned only the Greeks and that xeniai between Greeks and barbarians were anomalous. This contribution, based on an analysis of the evidence, starting from the Homeric poems, aims at demonstrating that xenia was not exclusively a Greek institution and that the examples Gauthier produced to support his thesis are not significant.

Abstract
Since the publication of a paper by Gauthier in 1973, it has been a widespread opinion that the social institution known as xenia concerned only the Greeks and that xeniai between Greeks and barbarians were anomalous. This contribution, based on an analysis of the evidence, starting from the Homeric poems, aims at demonstrating that xenia was not exclusively a Greek institution and that the examples Gauthier produced to support his thesis are not significant.File in questo prodotto:
