Zakzaky, Ibrahim El- (b. 1953), Nigerian Shiite activist. Ibrahim El-Zakzaky (Ibrāhīm b. Yaʿqūb b. ʿAlī al-Zakzakī) is one of the icons of modern political Islamism in Nigeria and the founding father of the Shiite movement in the West African country. His life and career illustrate the convergence of religion, political protest and utopianism that characterize many twentieth century Islamist movements, in particular those who espouse the characteristically Shiite interpretation of Islam as the religion of the oppressed.
