As part of the broader reflection on “Africa in the World, the World in Africa” , and, more specifically, on the mutual influence between Africa and the Islamic world, this article aims to analyze the modalities of the dissemination of legendary maġāzī literature in Africa. For this purpose, it focuses primarily on those narratives recounting the military expeditions of the Prophet Muḥammad and his companions (in Ar. ġazawāt, sing. ġazwa) that have been transmitted in multiple Islamic languages (Arabic, Berber, Swahili, and other African languages) and it outlines, in broad lines, modes of and actors in the complex processes of translation, adaptation and transmission of this genre in different areas of the continent (Maghreb, Sub-Saharan and Eastern Africa).
