On the basis of a re-reading by sociolinguistics and sociolinguistically oriented narratology, Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope enables an innovative approach to the analysis of the oral narratives brought together in the Israelkorpus, as the former opens up access to the complex interaction between the cultural framework conditions, cultural norms and discourses, the personal experiences of the narrators and the specific narrative situation in which the interview takes place. The present work draws on the concept of the chronotope of crisis and examines narrated discontinuities that include encounters with symbolic space markings of anti-Semitic content. The detailed analysis of two examples selected from the sub-corpus created for this study, for which narrative analytical instruments are closely linked with findings from linguistic landscape research, examines how questions of identity are negotiated via changes in access to spaces and wants to work out the connection between narrowing of space, exclusion, and stigmatization.
